How do you like to cook?
Cooking is how I unwind at the end of the day. My job as a designer is very creative, but the outcomes of my projects are typically months away. With cooking, the pay-off is immediate and I can be as experimental and as messy as I want!
One of my favorite questions to ask my clients is: How do you like to cook? People immediately relax as they tell a personal story about how their home-life operates. Family dynamics, routines, habits, and passions, all have a place in a well-designed kitchen. The kitchen can be a place of traditions or an environment of self-expression; it is our job as designers to harness the life you want into the kitchen of your dreams.
No matter what your cooking style, here are a few considerations to help you bring out your inner chef:
Whether you are chopping vegetables or rolling dough, having a large and unobstructed counter space is a must. Adding an island or peninsula will give you the dedicated prep work area you desire. Consider granite or quartz countertops for rolling out dough; the coolness of the stone will keep your dough from getting warm and sticky.
Dinner and a Show
If you love entertaining, having your cooktop in your island is a great way for your guests be a part of the action without actually putting them to work. Another way to involve your guests is to have a small bar sink in your island, making it easy to lend a hand preparing vegetables. A bar sink can also act as a satellite beverage station for guests to help themselves to a drink without interrupting workflow.
Restaurant-style appliances are all the rage. They have a great industrial look and will help take your technique to the next level. If you are cooking lots of oily or fragrant foods, make sure to get a powerful hood fan to help eliminate unwanted food odours.
These days there is an appliance for every task big and small. If you are like me, you probably have too many and are always looking for a place to keep them out of sight and off the counter. For small appliances, a deep pantry with internal drawers is a great solution. For small gadgets, all of Deslaurier’s drawers have an option to add storage components to help maximize space.
