A look at a career student's journey into the Kitchen & Bath industry…
Well hello there!
While an easy topic to cover in December would be “How to spice up your space for the holidays…” I thought I would try something a little different. Here at Deslaurier we have a very eclectic (and I guess sometimes electric!) range of personalities and expertise. Everyone has a special part in making your kitchen and bath project come to life! I am very pleased to be one of those parts. Here’s a quick look at my journey and how I came to be at Deslaurier.
I first started at Deslaurier as a co-op student. Finishing my third diploma at Algonquin College (hence the career student) in the Kitchen & Bath Design program, I was given the chance to see firsthand everything we do here. I sat in on meetings with designers, inspected installed kitchens, helped out in the quality control department at the plant; you name it, I got to see how it’s done! It was a no brainer; once I had graduated, I wanted to work for this company (of course, if they’d have me!). After all, it had originated in the same place I was born, Renfrew ON – if that’s not a sign, I’m not sure what is?
Coming aboard part time last June, I helped out with small projects and estimating in the Ottawa showroom. While doing so, I was also given the amazing opportunity to learn hands on, working with an installer for 6 months. I can’t say I learned all there is to know, but then again, Rome wasn’t built in a day! I started slow, installing hardware and prepping vanities and by the end I was installing them myself. He always says “You learned from the best!” and you wouldn’t hear an argument from me. I quite enjoyed my time on site, getting my hands dirty – and as a result, I am much better at my job today!
A year ago November, I started working for a long standing Deslaurier designer, as a Design Support person. Making site visits, measuring new homes, revising base plans, going through appliance specifications and placing orders is all a part of my daily routine. I think this is what makes it so hard to make design decisions in my own home renovation! We see so many different projects, inspirations and ideas on a daily basis – it’s enough to make anyone’s head spin! But that is all part of the fun, and as many of you know, you can get caught up on Houzz for hours without realizing it!
I didn’t picture myself here 18 months ago. When I first arrived, an inexperienced, shy (ok I’m not sure anyone around here would describe me as shy!) version of who I am today – I couldn’t have imagined the friends I would meet, the experiences I would gain and the passion I would have for this career in such a short time. Looking back now, I am so glad it took me 3 diplomas to get here, because it’s made this part that much sweeter, finding a career that truly inspires me. Working at Deslaurier, a smile is something I wear often. Not a day goes by without a laugh around the office and getting to help a client’s dream space come to life is just part of the gig! So while this post has nothing to do with the holidays, the top 5 design tips, or what colours make a space pop – I think we can all agree that the holidays are a time to celebrate. We get to look back on the year and reflect on our journey, wherever it has taken us, surrounded by the people we love!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from our family to yours!
